Global Goals

NO POVERTY

One of the global issues I saw in tlaquepaque was poverty. There was much more homelessness and poverty in mexico. There we're a lot of people on the streets downtown begging for money. In the middle of the mercado a man with an injured head or maybe a birth condition came up to the whole group and started asking for money, I felt really bad for him and I could tell that he really needed money but I didn't think I had any coins by the time I finally found one he had already walked away. I felt really bad that I didn't give him anything and I hope he got enough money to buy food to eat or something. I saved the pesos just in case I saw him again. Also the houses there we're much smaller and more people probably lived in those small houses than in our bigger houses in the u.s. Most of the houses I saw we're made of concrete and really small they we're either one or two stories and they we're all cramped together with other houses. There was literally not even enough space to walk between houses. Some of them were painted colors that you would never see houses painted in the u.s. Some homes we're blue or pink or bright green! I thought the colors we're really cool and made the houses all stand out. They were way more cramped but they also value their family a lot in mexico. I really wish there was less poverty there so they could afford things like clean water or nicer housing. I'm sure there are even poorer places in mexico than tlaquepaque and this is really sad. The world would be so much better if there was no poverty. Maybe eventually there won't be the struggle of poverty. - Ella McMullin

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION, AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Another global issue that I saw in tlaquepaque was global goal #9 industry innovation and infrastructure. In mexico while driving to and from tlaquepaque we saw that they don't have as strong buildings as us. Many of the buildings we're in poor condition and some of them we're falling down, others had bits of concrete missing. The buildings were usually made of concrete and they we're painted unusual colors like green, blue, and pink. Also they obviously don't have as many jobs as us. we saw lots of homemade businesses and also big huge factories which pollute the air a lot. A lot of People also probably work on family own farms. All of these jobs don't pay extremely well and that's probably why the houses aren't in perfect condition. In the u.s we are much farther along in innovation then what I saw in mexico. Quite a few houses I saw while driving had clothes lines hung up on the roof and clothes drying on them. Another thing I saw a lot of was graffiti, it was everywhere. I think it looked pretty cool. I noticed nck was spray painted on a bunch of buildings and walls. I'm assuming it's probably a gang or something since it was all over the city. The school was really big and it looked like it had been there for a long time. It had bars on the windows and it was kinda worn down but for the time it's been there it's probably in pretty good condition. Even though their school is huge they have so many students that they are cramped. I'm sure they do have nice buildings in mexico but for the common people the living in the part we saw quarters are much different. I personally think that richer countries like america should give less rich countries like mexico some money to help them solve issues like these. - Ella McMullin

                                                                           CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

In mexico one of the global issues is having clean water and there being sanitation. People don’t realize it but a small amount of pollution can affect lots of the clean water. This is why when you go to mexico you have to be very careful of the water you drink, and if you eat something made with unfiltered or cooked water. In northern and central parts of the country challenges include water scarcity, and most of the water in 2006 was taken from the tops of rivers, and lakes. Some of the main things in the water are E. coli, cholera, and salmonella. In Mexico families will spend more than 10% of their weekly earnings on drinkable and portable water. This may not seem like a lot but for families with little to no money this is one of their struggles. We can get free filtered water if we need it where they pay for what they need to survive. Sanitation also plays a big part in having clean water. Worldwide 780 million people do not have access to an improved water source, this is how it can be in mexico. Worldwide, millions of people are infected with neglected tropical diseases, many of which are water and/or hygiene-related and would be prevented if there were access to clean water. Water stress can also relate to the loss of clean water. When there are more people trying to get one small thing of water people will start to hog or share leading to more diseases from too much traveling of little water in little time. In conclusion clean water and sanitation was one of the bigger global issues in mexico, people all over mexico are trying to help but without proper attention it could just become more and more of an issue over time. - Zoe plummer

                                                                                      QUALITY EDUCATION

Mexico Tlaquepaque can be a very great place to go, for food, parties, and

Souvenirs. But their are Children who live there that don’t go to school. As most people know every child needs an a education. Children need education for there’s and our future. If children don’t have a good education or any then they could be doing thing they aren’t supposed to be doing like vandalising, stealing, or they won’t be able to get a good jobs so they will end up in the streets. No wants that to happen to anyone's children. reasons why children aren’t getting the education is because of the lack of money parent don’t have, kids being bullied, and it could be the schools that aren’t teaching kids anything.

The first reason why kids aren’t being educated is because of the lack of money parents don’t have. Earning money is really hard especially since 17 pesos is like 1 dollar. I bet some parents are struggling to get money even when bills and rents are rising. But it’s not just bill's, parents also need money for food. Someone told me it is like 100 pesos to get a burger at a fast food restaurant. If money is like that in mexico then i’m pretty sure getting their children at a school is pretty hard. Most children have to work to earn money to survive. Some kids will go out to look for a job so they can help their parents pay the bills and get the food they need. Not all kid don’t go to school because of the lack of money some actually drop out of school.

The second reason why kids aren’t being educated is that they drop out of school because of bullies. Children who are getting bullied don’t get help from Teachers, parent, sibling, and even friends. So they just drop out of school to help their parents instead. Kids are being bullied because schools are probably aren’t teaching kids to defend themselves especially without violence. Schools are probably aren’t teaching kids to not be bullies too. But I think there are schools that are probably working on it.- Genesis Marquez

                                                                                            NO POVERTY

The definition of poverty is the state of being extremely poor.. Extreme poverty rates have been cut by more than half since 1990. While this is a remarkable achievement, one in five people in developing regions still live on less than $1.25 a day, and there are millions more who make little more than this daily amount, plus many people risk slipping back into poverty. Poverty is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Economic growth must be inclusive to provide sustainable jobs and promote equality.

Today the current exchange rate is  18.61 pesos. That is really bad for the people of Mexico and the lower the better and the higher the worse. The reason people are coming to America is because each day the exchange rate is getting higher and people are getting poorer and they are not able to help their families. Around half of the population lives in poverty; about 10 percent of people live in extreme poverty. The reason people live in poverty is because 25 million Latinos make less than $14 a day and a quarter. That is enough to buy food. Many families have children who work as well to help their family. Poverty is problem no one can ever fix. - Rebecca Torres

CLEAN AND AFORDABLE ENERGY

So I am going to be discussing the seventh global goal Affordable and Clean Energy and the thing that just bothers me the most about the topic is that there is not that many people that sell clean energy that is affordable to most people and that the governments have still not invested in affordable and clean energy. When we traveled to mexico as a class we couldn’t really see it on the plane there but there was a huge smog cloud over the city and we didn’t notice it when we got off the plane because we were very drowsy and tired at the time but when we woke up the next day some of us must of noticed the pollution. When we were in the van when I looked into the buildings I saw that some didn’t have lights and no tv or any form of electronics but if they did it was not clean because of the smog clouds and some factories were practically puking out pollution. One thing that I did not see was that there were no windmills at all no dams but I understand that because it’s a desert and there is not that much water but still that is not an excuse for the windmills you can just put a windmill in the corner of the field and not much is lost. The fact that they do that is just plain surprising because first is they won’t affect the crops besides a couple lost plants where you have to put it and second the windmills will greatly help there smog situation instead of burning coal or something like that. So just in all its horrible that most electric companies that actually sell clean energy just sit there and say they have great prices and when you have them for a time the will slowly raise the prices and the companies that actually do that are far and few.-Jacob Smith

                                                                            CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

When you walk around Bend you don't usually see trash everywhere. Bend is a clean environment compared to Guadalajara. I remember being in the van and looking at the city thinking the pollution was fog or clouds. But then I noticed it was pollution. I was surprised. My main global goal is clean water and sanitation.

Clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in. There is sufficient fresh water on the planet to achieve this. But due to bad economics or poor infrastructure, every year millions of people, most of them children, die from diseases associated with inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene.

Water scarcity, poor water quality and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices and educational opportunities for poor families across the world. Drought afflicts some of the world’s poorest countries, worsening hunger and malnutrition.

By 2050, at least one in four people is likely to live in a country affected by chronic or recurring shortages of fresh water. I remember Sra. Meera telling us that we shouldn’t drink the water their only the one in bottle. She told us the water there wasn’t clean. Bend has clean water that is all drinkable. But knowing that if you drink the water and  could get sick is very scary.  Mexico is one of the cities that has a lot  pollution. There are still many more cities that are worse than what I saw in Tlaquepaque. Clean water is needed for humans to survive. People in this world don’t have clean water and it makes them travel longer in order to get water for their family. This is a big problem in the world today and I think we should make an effort to avoid putting trash in the river or ocean etc.  - Rebecca Torres

NO POVERTY

So I am to be discussing the one of the global goals today and it will be the first global goal No Poverty this global goal is the probably the most problematic global goal of the list and the fact of the matter is it just doesn’t need to be known but we need to also take action not just read paragraphs and just sit there and donate money to the poor you could do that but if you want to make a bigger difference donate huge amounts of food to food drives and start food drives not just in america but in other countries too. What I am saying if you don’t understand me ranting like that I will tell you is that you need to get off your couch and turn off your computer or whatever you read this on and go to a food drive somewhere if its a hour drive that's not far at all and bring a bunch of food if not start a food drive if you can’t because you have plans with friends get them involved and their friends and so on and then you will start making a difference that can impact the world because in different countries they will notice this and they will be inspired and then you will have another big group of people in another country helping your country and so on (by the way I know this is still ranting just not as intense). In Mexico I saw a bunch of things that weren't savory at all there were many houses with no doors no air conditioning and plus the houses were only made of concrete and if a big earthquake all of the houses would be destroyed in one fell swoop and what would happen then they would just be a huge tent city and that could last for years. Look my point is poverty is a really bad thing and we need to do something big to give them food, houses, money, etc. sorry but the fact of the matter is it takes more than one person to help the world no matter how rich you are.- Jacob Smith
